NEW ARC

North East Wildlife Animal Rehabilitation Coalition is a 501(c)3, non-profit organization. We are a group of licensed wildlife rehabilitators, and these are the tales of the injured and orphaned animals we care for until they are able to be released back into the wild.

Finally....the gang's all here!

The last of the regulars around here has finally checked in! I have to say I was getting a little nervous about little digger here.....but I looked up from my coffee the other day and there he was! Hole renovations and weed control are in progress at last.

The mom's are in daytime mode again too, out foraging early to beat the crowds. I ran into a couple of them the other day while taking care of the boys out in the woods. Though I'm not positive who this is, she looks a lot like Button. She was not friendly enough to want to come down and visit, but she wasn't so scared she didn't mind posing for the camera when I called to her! She was pretty relaxed with my presence. Mystery mom number 2 disappeared in a flash when she saw me, so I'm guessing not one of my girls.

This time of year is great for being able to photograph them out in the wild, thanks to their daylight travels.

The babies, now named Mason & Cinder, are doing great and growing like weeds. So far we have had a lot of calls about bunnies, most of which were just cases of re-nesting the babies. JoAnn has a few that needed to come in, but nothing crazy yet.......the explosion is imminent I'm sure!

An update.

The hard drive in my computer was just replaced so I hope to be up and running soon...woohoo! In the meantime, a brief little update!
A couple happy endings thanks to Maureen! An adult bunny had been pretty much knocked out by a group of guys playing horseshoes. Poor thing had head trauma and I'm sure a pretty good headache! A few days in a nice quiet hutch and he was eating like a pig and no more head tilt. When I brought him back to his home he bolted out of the carrier....straight as an arrow across the field and into the bushes. Then she rescued a  young skunk about a week ago. Some lady found it floating in her pool one morning, scooped it out with a net, and left it there in her yard. It wasn't until later that afternoon that she decides to call animal control because it's still breathing! Ugghhh! I'm happy to report the little bugger made a full recovery though and is roaming happily in my woods now!

On to the raccoons.....
In the main pen. Trooper, Doc, Sis, Bama, Springer, Chester, Rizzoli, Isles, Tumbler, Legend, Sammy, Soldier, Rocco, Brim and Spit...all doing great. 5 of them are getting doxycycline for some skin lesions that developed on their foreheads just in case it's part of the whole mycoplasma problem that started with Pebbles and Porcelain earlier this spring.
In the small pen attached to the main pen we have Porcelain, Pebbles, Lucky and Ducky. They were separated out from the main pen after Pebbles developed a swollen foot and Ducky was limping, just in case it was a recurrence of the mycoplasma. They are also on doxy  and may stay for the winter, as fellow rehabbers across the state have begun a study on the disease as it seems to have reared it's ugly head all over the place! They are doing fine though so don't worry! Pebbles foot is pretty much healed and Ducky is no longer limping. Her issue was most likely just a minor injury.
In the larger baby pen we have Houdini, Pinner, Spencer, Petey and 5 of Laurie's little ones. Cooper and Mayhem arrived first then the younger 3 that for the life of me I can never remember their names and all 3 look alike! I'll get it eventually, especially if they stay the winter which is most likely since they are very small.
And finally we have the 4 boat babies in the release pen we had to throw up to handle the overflow!
It's a full house around here right now.

Some of the other regulars.

The snow isn't keeping anyone away. Visits from the coonies slowed way down, but didn't come to a complete halt! Our other residents were unperturbed by snow altogether!
Our little red fox friend was un-burying some chow for dinner. He or she has been around during the day sometimes too! Just saw it Sunday afternoon...beautiful animal with a wonderful, full healthy coat.
One of our resident coyote friends. Also looking quite healthy! Definitely more weary of the feeders. He or she will only take stuff out on the ground outside of the boxes. I can see why they are difficult to live trap....very cautious of unnatural things!

Then there are all the buns JoAnn has released around here! LOL Hi Mom...we're doing great!

The past couple days have been very warm and rainy....barely any of that snow is left on the ground now! Wooo hooo!!! I'm sure it's short lived, but enjoying it just the same!

The new kid & the bunnies gone wild!

There is a new addition here. This little boy was found on a busy sidewalk in Arlington so the Animal Control Officer scooped him up and the rest is history. He is very sweet and very wiggly right now! No name yet....but it will come to me! He took to the bottle on the first try....what a good boy!

And our 7 little bunnies that JoAnne was caring for?? They all did great and were released the other day in the woods at my house. Look how big they got! Still can't believe they are the same little bunnies!

Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy to cute!!!! Good luck little guys!

And then there was light....and a bunny update!

Remember those 7 tiny bunnies I had for a couple of days before JoAnn could take them?? Well here they are now!! Amazing! They are adorable and doing great! Cottontails are VERY fragile and difficult to rehab, but JoAnne is awesome and works miracles with the little guys. All 7 have grown into very cute, fuzzy bunnie balls of fur and it will not be long before they come back to my place for release with all the other bunnies JoAnn has raised and released here. Kudos to JoAnn!!!!

Dad was back to help out. There is no electricity in any of the pens etc. At night, I usually have to juggle holding a flashlight in one hand, while changing litter boxes, feeding and fending off climbing raccoons with the other. Thanks to Dad, I now have both hands free AND I can see what I am doing at night! Wooohoooooooo! He built a little box into the wall of the pen so I can put a light inside it that climbing coons and bad weather cannot get to. All it takes is a couple of long extension cords from the house to the box, plugged into the the light inside and presto! Night time care is a breeze now! Sometimes it's the little things that get ya all excited! ha ha

Awwwwww!

How cute are they!?? Almost as cute as raccoons. Here are 7 orphaned bunnies I ended up with Monday. I've been a busy girl adding these guys to the feeding schedule! I'm no expert on the bunny rehab though! Luckily for me JoAnne is!! She gave me all the info I needed to care for these delicate little guys until she was able to pick them up today. Now they are in the hands of the best and I should see them again soon when JoAnn brings them back here to release them!

Some more playtime for Tosser and Mohican and a little snooze for Tugger in the afternoon mixed into these pics. How relaxed does she look on that shelf! Silly girl!
